Where does my 'green' energy really come from?

Choosing a green tariff does not mean that you will receive 100% renewable energy such as onshore/off shore wind turbines, solar plants etc.

The National Grid takes energy from a range of sources - the UK's current energy mix is C. 33% renewable sources, 33% Natural Gas and the remainder from other fuels.
In essence the National Grid works as a giant food mixer for energy, blending together.

Renewable energy suppliers are required to show they have valid contracts with clean energy producers, made direct investments project or obtained (REGO) Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin certificates.
Rego certificates are issued for each Megawaat-hour of clean renewable energy that is produced. Energy suppliers can purchase certificates these, meaning suppliers can claim to be supplying & supporting renewables when actually it is a blended mix via the National Grid.
